PUMP TRACKS and BIKE PARKS

We specialize in the design and construction of progressive, challenging pump tracks and family friendly, multi discipline bike skills parks. Using our extensive experience in the development of municipal and private pump track and bike park facilities, we can craft a custom facility that accommodates multiple rider types and skill levels, while considering best practices based on the site conditions and terrain.

For most municipalities, due to their range of benefits including increased usership, supreme traction, predictable conditions, and reduced maintenance – we strongly recommend considering the development of asphalt surfaced, beginner – intermediate level pump tracks.

SITE PLANNING & REVIEW

Our team can review and consider multiple potential sites for your new facility and help establish criteria for the final selection of the best site area to develop. Our expertise and decades of combined experience allows us to properly assess a variety of considerations that will directly impact your facility including site conditions such as existing features such as existing vegetation, trail access, parking and water source, terrain and topography, and environmental areas to design a facility that will blend harmoniously into the surrounding terrain with minimal impact. Depending on the size and type of terrain, our team will tailor our services to fit within a realistic area on your property.

CONCEPTUAL & DETAILED DESIGN

Whether it’s an asphalt pump track, or a multi-use bike skills park with advanced dirt jump lines and an adjoining pump track, we work with the project site areas opportunities and constraints, and within the client’s budget to design a facility that will best meets the needs and abilities of the local user group, while properly fitting into the site area.

We pride ourselves in our ability to design progressive parks that simultaneously meet the needs of multiple rider types and skill levels, and balance community and stakeholder interests, while maximizing functionality, track and site flow, and user safety. Our design services include preliminary conceptual sketches to detailed, construction level drawing sets in AutoCAD format, and the ability to create 3D renderings for visual presentation.

CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE

In addition to the initial stakeholder consultation and conceptual design, we also offer expert construction and maintenance services of bike park and track facilities. Using proven construction techniques refined over multiple years and various projects, we can construct everything we design to municipal standards of park finishing, including asphalt pump tracks, traditional clay surface bike tracks and parks, and XC Mountain Bike trail systems.

Whether it be a complete track build, redevelopment, or expansion of an older bike track facility, we have the expertise working with a variety of surface materials including natural terrain, clay, wood and asphalt. We also provide seasonal maintenance services to repair seasonal damage from rider use, unauthorized modification, erosion, and harsh weather to bring your facility back up to top-notch condition for the riding season.

CROSS COUNTRY (XC) MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL SYSTEMS

We are leaders in the planning, design, and construction of cross country (XC) and mountain bike trail MTB networks. With extensive experience in a variety of trail services, we can create new, master planed trail facilities from start to finish, or to improve existing trails by reconfiguring and enhancing dated or problematic sections.

We pride ourselves on the creation of smooth and highly flowing, sustainable, and well- connected trails that are simply designed, and expertly hand finished, resulting in a final trail that blends harmoniously into the existing terrain, with minimal environmental impact. We can offer trails that cater to a variety of users and skill levels including family friendly beginner trails, to challenging and progressive intermediate and advanced flow trails with BMX style features such as rolling doubles and large sweeping bermed corners.

SITE PLANNING & CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

Basing a trail system on a quality design from the outset is perhaps the most critical step of the development process. Our first step in creating a new and progressive trail network is to immerse ourselves in the site area to fully understand the physical terrain, vegetation, review the areas opportunities and constraints, client expectations, and then determine the best possible riding lines. After a thorough analysis of the area including a review of base mapping, soil analysis, key feature documenting and GPS route mapping, we will then create a high-level conceptual master plan showing all potential trails, trailheads/ hubs, and site connections for further client consideration.

Our detailed assessment of topography and environmental conditions will ensure the final trail system is desirable for a range of users and skill levels, is sustainable, has maximum flow, is based on a logical traffic pattern, and can be added to for future expansion.

LAYOUT & CONSTRUCTION

Once the trails have been approved for development, detailed site layout and route flagging of each section will be undertaken in the field by our specialized team, with careful consideration going into every alignment and curve. Our creative approach will ensure maximum sustainability, and a minimal impact on the environment by utilizing the best possible configuration of trails, based on the site conditions, terrain, and natural features.

We create challenging, progressive trails with a highly flowing style, a smooth finished riding surface, and multiple rolling features, twists, turns and quick elevation changes to ensure maximum user experience for a variety of users and abilities. In addition to our refined trail finishing, our networks are cleverly designed to feature simple wayfinding for a positive user experience.

MODIFICATION OF EXISTING TRAIL NETWORKS

Many existing MTB trail systems have been created organically by a combination of volunteers, staff and trail users, completed over an extended time period and with good intentions, but frequently lacking the overall comprehensive vision and cohesion of a master planned and executed network.

Improperly developed trail networks can create a frustrating user experience that are difficult to navigate with multiple options and intersections and widely varying styles of built terrain, resulting in a disjointed feeling trail.

Our team can provide effective solutions to landowners and property managers existing trail systems with the introduction of a modification plan, including a potentially simplified layout, reconfiguration or realignment of problematic sections, a unified construction theme, maintenance and repairs of existing trails, and enhanced signage and that will be a noticeable improvement and more enjoyable for all users.

MUNICIPAL PLANNING & DESIGN

Municipal Bike park, track and trail development is a relatively new and modern recreational amenity in Canada, with not a lot of past examples to look back on. Often the new facility will be the first of its kind for a Town or City, and with limited inhouse experience to base the project from. Our team can help bridge this gap – from initial public consultation sessions to site review and selection, conceptual and detailed design preparation, tender packaging, contractor qualification reviews and construction inspections, we have been relied upon by municipalities across Ontario and Canada to assist stakeholders with the development of a range of cycling facilities.

In addition to the development of bike parks, tracks, and MTB trails, we area also able lend our expertise and specialized skills to the detailed design and physical implementation of Active Transportation cycling networks, systems, and principals. For municipalities looking to expand and enhance their cycling networks, we can greatly assist using our knowledge gained through tens of thousands of kilometres of urban cycling and commuting, and years of cycling advocacy by our team members.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION & PRELIMINARY DESIGN

Our team understands the entire process of cycling facility development from a variety of roles, including riders, advocates, builders, parents, neighbours and as approval authorities. We are effective at balancing the needs of the community, requirements from the municipality and environmental agencies, and the wishes of the local riding group. We can effectively communicate with a range of stakeholders to ensure that every idea has been considered, and that the community needs are being met through the development of preliminary conceptual drawings and plans for further review and discussion. We use a variety of methods to gain public feedback including public open houses, design workshops, online surveys, and detailed questionnaires to reflect the needs and wants of stakeholders and the community.

ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION IMPLEMENTATION

The benefits of Active Transportation including cycling infrastructure and facility development are well known throughout Canadian municipalities, however the physical implementation of the recommendations and strategies detailed in high level policy documents can be very difficult to deliver. Through years of facility development and thousands of kilometres of urban cycling, we understand the fine details of Active Transportation amenities, including street and trail intersections, line painting, grade changes, signage and wayfinding. We can help your municipality create a highly functional and enjoyable Active Transportation network.

MUNICIPAL CONSULTATION & SITE INSPECTIONS

For projects not requiring our construction services, or where not practical, we can assist municipalities from a consultation standpoint using our detailed design drawings, contractor pre-qualifications to create tender level bid packages for larger scale construction projects.

We can create comprehensive design packages that are highly detailed, yet concise and easy to read, in addition to material quantities and cost estimates for project forecasting and budgeting. Inspection of site conditions and construction progress are also a valuable service we can provide our municipal partners, ensuring that the specified facilities are being built in accordance with approved design and with best practices.
